Guerilla vs. Gorilla
August 17, 2009 - 12:00am
With the Economy in the dump and business’s going down and out, business owners have to rethink their marketing models and start to think about bootstrapping. So, instead of getting a suite in the “The Beverly Hills Hotel” for that meeting you had to do in person, you call a friend in town and crash on his couch. Or, better yet, do it over the phone or internet, duh.
But, with the exception of Trump who has a “get out of bankruptcy free card” and, oh yeah, a Gold Toilet, we all know how to cut corners by not spending on needless business expenses. Or do we?
Anyone who is anyone knows that when business is tough; cut hours, lose inventory and advertise all those products (which are now on sale). But not everybody who thinks advertising thinks about the other, well known, tactic in a bootstrapper’s repertoire: Guerilla Marketing.
Or maybe they do but think it’s some PR stunt which requires more work, costs the same as a commercial and gets the same amount of audience. Don’t be a Gorilla. This type of marketing is essential for any startup and crucial for any business facing any major loss in customers. Why? Well its cheap (sometimes free), effective, and viral. So I ask; why don’t we see this type of marketing everyday? Why can’t I go over a speed bump and some how be reminded of breast cancer, or open a business book to find a consultants card offering a free consultation? Or be walking downtown and look into a tree not usually bearing fruit to find fruit hanging & advertising a fresh pie shop or farmers market?
Why? – People don’t know how effective it is that’s why!! And that’s why you only see large smart companies doing it or at least heard of them doing it. So if your a small business owner, get out there don’t be a Gorilla be a Guerilla!
